Calvin Johnson has a touchdown

Calvin Johnson has a touchdown taken away from him on a weird replay ruling (again)

Calvin Johnson getting a touchdown taken away from him in Week 1 on a goofy replay reversal ... it's a tradition unlike any other.

In 2010, Johnson had a touchdown taken away against the Bears in a play so controversial, it spawned the explanation "The Calvin Johnson Rule" for any touchdown that isn't a touchdown because the receiver doesn't finish the catch. That play cost the Lions a win (and still, to this day, it's a baffling call).

On Sunday against Minnesota, it looked like Johnson had a sure touchdown. He made a great diving catch. For fantasy owners who dealt with Johnson being continuously tackled on the 1-yard line last year, it was a nice way to start the season. There was no question watching it in real time that it was a touchdown. Then the officials went to the replay booth.
And then they ruled it wasn't a touchdown.
Oh, say it ain't so.

Johnson ended up stretching the ball and apparently lost control as he cradled the ball going to the ground, negating his touchdown.
Yep, the Calvin Johnson Rule. The call was reversed even though it looked like a great play and a sure touchdown, Johnson had his first touchdown taken off the board, and his reaction was understandable – a frustrated smile that seemed to say "Again?"
Yeah, Megatron. Again.

  2. 2010:
    ATHLETICS
Christine Ohuruogu, who came fifth in the women's 400m said: "I thought it would be quite nice to keep the momentum going and I knew I had some good runs still in me.
"But it's mentally tough and a bit harder to get back up after what has happened. But I did want to come out and run fast, but I wasn't quite sharp enough."
  3. 2007:
    ATHLETICS
More from Usain Bolt and whether he will be competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year.
"I don't know what I'm doing yet but I would love to go to the Commonwealth Games and get a medal," said Bolt.
"But my coach is the one who decides where I go."
  4. 2001:
    ATHLETICS
Usain Bolt has been talking to BBC Sport. The 100m Olympic and world champion says: "My start felt better but I need to work on it.
"I can definitely run faster. I started my season pretty poorly and got injured at the start so it was not the perfect season or the best of my career. But the best thing is I finished on top and dominated.
"I still enjoy doing this and this is one of the best crowds and it gave me the energy.
"If I had got the better start it would've been 9.70."
  5. 1956:
    ATHLETICS
But American's Natasha Hastings wins it in 50.36 seconds. Amantle Montsho comes second in 50.41 to take the Diamond Race title. But it is a disappointing end to a great year for Christine Ohuruogu, who comes fifth in 50.95.

    ATHLETICS
British 100m sprinter James Dasaolu said: "For me it was about executing the start and I didn't do that as well as I would've liked to.
"I gave it my best, but maybe I was a bit distracted. When you look at my goals for the season I wanted to run sub-10 seconds, which I have done twice and I made the final in Russia.
"From senior level to junior level, we have seen British athletes picking up medals this year."
  8. 1944:
    ATHLETICS
Dasaolu makes a decent start, but Bolt, as he always does, powers through late on. He wins it in 9.80 seconds. American Michael Rodgers produces a season's best to come in second in 9.90 seconds, with Nesta Carter and Justin Gatlin on 9.94 seconds.
Britain's James Dasaolu comes eighth in 10.15 seconds.

  10. 1941:

  11. 1935:
    ATHLETICS

Ukraine host England in another World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
  13. 1926:
    ATHLETICS
Some reaction from the men's 200m. James Ellington said: "It wasn't a bad race, a bit unhappy to draw lane one but that is the way the cookie crumbles, so I can't complain."
Chris Clarke added: "I would've liked to have gone quicker but only a month ago I was running 20.90 so I'm happy with the improvement."
  14. 1921:
    ATHLETICS
Shortly after Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's win in the women's 100m, there is more success for Jamaican sprinters as Warren Weir comes first in the men's 200m. He wins in a time of 19.87 seconds, with countryman Nickel Ashmeade coming second in a season's best time of 19.93 seconds.

    Denise Lewis, BBC SportATHLETICS
"The most difficult thing for an athlete is the mental battle, especially with the season Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce has had.
"She knows she is in shape and in form. But she is now beginning a supremacy of women's sprinting and she makes it look effortless."
  16. 1913:
    ATHLETICS
Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce comfortably wins the women's 100m race in a time of 10.72 seconds.
BBC Sport's Steve Cram is impressed. He says: "What a race from Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. It's a new meeting record, into a slight head-wind as well.
"She had a good start and was under no real pressure. That has been the story of the season for her, it has been all about her and her consistency."
  17. 1910:
    ATHLETICS
Britain's Rhys Williams, who finished eighth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 50.13 seconds, said: "I raced on Tuesday and ran a bit quicker. It has been a long season and everyone has tired legs.
"I set myself high standards, I will have a few weeks off and then keep pushing on. Determination is not an issue."
  18. 1903:

BBC2's live coverage starts at 1900 BST, with Usain Bolt being one of 59 athletes who won a medal at the World Championships to be in action in Brussels.
